Penny Pollard

Penny is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans contemporary jewellery, poetry and visual arts. Her award-winning work has been shown nationally and internationally. Her art is poetically articulate and highly distinctive. Penny, who identifies as Deaf is fascinated by faces, masks and skulls. She works and reworks these motifs to address questions of subjectivity, portraiture, appearance, and labels. Predominantly working in metal, Penny’s art explores complex ideas of layered personal identity and the public/personal perceptions and assumptions of character; the initially seen surfaces and the underlying unseen strengths and fragilities.
Penny is dedicated to continually realising the changing needs and cultural aspirations of D/deaf artists and recognising the importance of being at the heart of culture as makers and viewers. Recently Penny has begun to consider and create work that has as its focus her personal experience of deafness which she explores in its many forms. Beginning her studies at NMIT in Collingwood in 2002, Penny went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts at Monash University in 2013. She now lives and works in Melbourne.
