Craft + Design Canberra’s and is proudly a not-for-profit membership based organisation which supports artists, craft practitioners, designers and makers at every stage of their careers.For over 52 years, Craft + Design Canberra has been leading the way in promoting and celebrating excellence and innovation in contemporary craft. This support is at the core of everything we do – in our retail space, exhibition gallery, membership program, events and throughout the Design Canberra Festival.
Our Open Studios program has been part of our core business for over 20 years and a feature of the Design Canberra Festival since 2014. An Open Studio is a unique opportunity for the general public to gain insight into the creative process, gaining a ‘behind the scenes’ personal experience of the local art scene. Visitors engage directly with artists and designers, learn about their practices, and have the opportunity to purchase work directly from the maker.
Collectively, the program makes an invaluable contribution to Craft + Design Canberra’s objectives to create a culture that values craft artists and designers and the work they produce investing in a sustainable creative ecology for our beautiful city of design.
HOW WILL YOUR SUPPORT HELP?
As we work hard to attract new and more diverse audiences for craft and design, Open Studios are the gem of our outreach program offering unique experiences to our community that support local artists to thrive. In 2022, over 5000 people attended our Open Studios s program, immersing themselves in the best of Canberra’s creative production.
During 2023 Craft + Design Canberra we will be running our Open Studios program in late October and early November.
We need to reach our target of $40,000 to run the program in 2023 which will allow us to:
- Pay each artist an industry standard artist fee to assist with the overheads of running an Open Studio.
- Manage the Open Studios program overall, selecting and coordinating the nominated studios, liaising with artists and maintaining an online presence via our website and social media platforms.
- Create a marketing campaign to actively promote the Open Studios program through online channels and media.
- Provide signage and posters for studio holders to display in the lead up to the event.
