Amanda Andlee POLAND’s recent work focusses on ceramics and the beauty of the natural environment. Her sculptural and functional works comment on the need to urgently protect the environment for the benefit of all. Research is key to her practice. Specific natural sites, researched in ACT and NSW, highlight the beauty and fragility of the environment. Recent clay sculptural forms and objects often include the carving process into the clay surface.
For Amanda this is a luxurious quiet meditative process. Close observation through drawing in clay translates found leaves to highlight the distinctive forms and their detail. The leaf is used as a symbol of hope, abundance, and growth. The time spent on carving is an act of respect and a valuing of nature, more than a scientific recording.
Amanda Andlee Poland, born in Melbourne, has an art practice that extends over four decades. She completed a Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) (majoring in Ceramics, Fabrication and Drawing) and Master of Fine Arts at Uni SA (installation) and is currently a full-time artist based in Canberra. She has worked extensively in Arts education (primary, secondary, and tertiary) and the museum and gallery sector in Canberra before returning full-time to her practice, primarily in ceramics.
