The story behind these earrings, as told by the artist Tracy Hopkirk:
I found counters in a Japanese antique shop. There were just a few in a bowl and I asked what they were. The GOH board game originated in China centuries ago but it was the Japanese that made it into the game we know today. The counters originally were made of Slate black and Shell for the white. I asked the store if on one of his trips he could find me a set. Many months later he called me and offered me what he’d found. The slate in these earrings are in fact at least 400 years old, they were made from that very set. The slate and shell are very rare and very sort after.
