Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre successfully operates with a small compact team. Executive Director; Communications and Events Coordinator; Diana Hare, Curator/Exhibition Manager and Alice Macdonald, Finance Officer are the core of Craft ACT activities. In addition they are assisted by two casual weekend staff, Julie Ryder and Sophia Emmett. Together they manage an extraordinary level of programs for the benefits of Canberra and the region audiences and support local contemporary craft artists and designers through membership and other activities.
Diana Hare has been with Craft ACT since late 2005 and continues in the role of the Curator and Exhibition Manager. Diana is a passionate advocate of the craft and design sector and brings with her an excellent knowledge of the local arts environment in Canberra. A committed team member of Craft ACT, Diana fulfils her ambition to work closely with artists realising new and existing projects for the organisation.
Alice Macdonald manages Craft ACT's finances and administration. With a tertiary degree in the Visual Arts Alice brings a succinct knowledge of the arts together with enormous skills in accounts and book-keeping. Successfully managing the vagaries of arts funding, Alice understands the importance of supporting Craft ACT's members and artists through efficiency and good financial processes.
Stephanie Von Gavel is a Legal Counsel with CSIRO where she is responsible for a range of technology related agreements, together with issues such as intellectual property management. Stephanie has also worked in Australia and overseas in the area of business development in biotechnology. Stephanie has had a life long interest in ‘making’ things and is a collector of contemporary craft and design objects.
Sharon Peoples completed her PhD in art history in 2008. She has worked as a designer/maker is represented in the collections of local and national institutions. She is the internship co-ordinator in the Museums and Collections Program in Liberal Arts at the Research School of Humanities at the Australian National University (ANU). Sharon now writes in the emerging area of fashion theory as well as maintaining a profile as an exhibiting artist, lecturing in textiles at the ANU School of Art and curating textile exhibitions. She also has lectured and tutored in the Research School of Humanities, Canberra School of Art ANU, Art History Department ANU where she completed her PhD, Military Uniforms in the Eighteenth Century: Gender Power and Politics. Her background also includes interior design, theatre design as well as an embroiderer.
Suzi McKinnon is the Executive Assistant to the three directors of the Molonglo Group. The Group is based in Canberra and is a recognized and privately owned property investment and development company dedicated to the development and restoration of high quality sustainable property. Suzi is instrumental in establishing cultural programs and active, artistic spaces for Canberra artists and community. She has been successful in developing partnerships with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra Glassworks, ANU, The Arc Cinema and The Street Theatre. Suzi’s experience includes all areas of business and governance, including legal and tenancy.
Chris Hardy is Lecturer in Industrial Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. He has been working in the field of design for the past 15 years in various capacities, notably Caroma Industries R&D Department in Sydney. As a designer and as a lecturer Chris has been involved with various committees and has engaged in diverse design related projects in a consultative capacity. He also designs and makes household objects, which have been recognised and shortlisted for various national and international competitions.
Craig Harris has been involved in several hands-on and creative industries since completing his Master of Fine Arts in 2002. He has been a lecturer, carpenter, cabinet maker, designer in residence at Newington College, and owned his own furniture design business. Craig's design practice is about making in ways that consider the environment and his major focus is furniture and objects. Craig has been a regular exhibitor in both solo and group exhibitions.
Charles Higgins is a director at the Australian National Audit Office, working to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Australian Government operations. He has previously worked at the NGA and related businesses in the arts industry. Charles is a qualified lawyer, and is also a board member of AusGlass : the Australian Association of Glass Artist Limited.
